POCKET MINDS
------------
Some years ago little sized, but
clever computers have popped up very
fast. The firs Casios, Psion
Organizers and Atari Portfolios
appeared, and they are still
developing. Let's see the new ones
from the CeBit in Hannover.
Casio was one of the first ones
flowing the world with
manager-calculators. The SF series
helped everyone; the SF-4000 with
smaller (32 Kbytes) memory was very
cheap compared to the SF-9000, what
had 64 Kbytes of ram, and could be
extended with various ROM-cards like:
English dictionary or math help. The
9000 with foil-keyboard had relatively
no success. But the failure was
repaired with the 9500 with normal
keyboard. The 9700 has only size and
aesthetical changes (like 4300 and
5300).
The real hot stuff is the new member
of the SF family, the R-10. On the
wider LCD screen there is place for
40*10 chars. The copy and search
functions are more easy and user
friendly; the memory is 128 Kbytes
big. 5 more helps were added to the
existing 9, so the 14 helps are:
ToDo, Tel, BusinessCard, Memo,
FreeFile, SpreadSheet, Cal, Reminder,
Schedule, Weekly, Calendar, HomeTime,
WorldTime and Card. Outstanding new
function is the internal tabulation
software.
The hardware costs about 600 DM,
it's in the shops for 3 months now.
Lots of people were interested in
the Casiostand Label Printer. The
little machine can print different
sized fonts, with a variety of font
types or graphics on a 9 or 18 mm
sticky tape. It's a very useful tool:
it can be used in shops (it can draw
line-codes, too), for envelope
addressing, for video/audio tapes,
labels can be even ironed on T-shirts!
Of course with the Copy-Pen, graphic
datas can be transferred to the
printer.
Psion has released the PC-
compatible Serie 3 a while ago, with
384 Kbytes of ROM, which is avilable
in cards, and with 128 or 256 Kbytes
of RAM for the MS-DOS Flash Filing
System. The memory can be extended
with the help of Solid State Disks
(SSD) to a max. of 4 megabytes. The
16bit NEC V30H guarantees a 3,84 Mhz
clock-speed. The text is displayed on
a 240*80 pixels LCD. It has an RS232
port for communicating with other
computers and for printing, too.
Window technics, roll-down menus are
making life and word processing
easier. The 128 Kbytes version costs
695 DM, the 256 is 895 DM.
Hewlett-Packard's new PC-compatible
pocketcomputer (HP 95LX) has similar
hardware to the Psion Serie 3. It has
0.5 megabytes of RAM, NEC V20H
processor, 240*128 pixels LCD display,
port for external RAM-cards, built-in
Lotus 1-2-3 and the usual functions).
It must be an excellent machine as it
costs 1400 DM.
All these calculators worked with
keyboards, but in special cases it's
not useful. The Poquet Computer Corp.
has showed the PoquetPad to the
public. There are just a few buttons
on the pad, most of the work can be
solved with a plastic pen. Ugly
handwriting is no match for the pad,
it turns it into normal chars. The
pad is PC XT-compatible.
